I always used to feel welcomed and safe coming here but now that the baristas aren't allowed to wear protective face masks I'm so upset on their behalf and for myself, there's so much sickness going around right now and I always feel better when the person preparing my food/drink is wearing a mask. To my understanding there is no specific reason for this new policy, just corporate Starbucks taking away baristas' personal right to protect themselves and the customers, and as a customer who always really appreciates when my barista is wearing a mask this is so upsetting to me. I can't even imagine what its like for any baristas who have older or disabled family members, kids in school, just anyone they are trying to protect from getting sick...food service is a person facing job and wearing a mask is absolutely a basic right in that environment. Hoping the policy is nixed soon but this store won't be getting my business as long as the baristas are not able to use basic personal protection measures at work.
I learned recently that Starbucks has implemented a mask policy that is vague, illegal, and ableist. Apparently, Starbucks is not allowing their employees to wear masks unless they can "prove" they are sick, which is dangerous to people who are immunocompromised. It is not Starbucks place to say what preventative health measures their employees are allowed to take, and it is a worker rights violation. I am not going to Starbucks anymore since they apparently want their stores to just be a petri dish.
I’m extremely disappointed to hear that Starbucks employees are no longer allowed to wear protective masks like KN95s unless they are currently sick or go through a bureaucratic process to apply for an accommodation. Every worker should be able to take reasonable measures like masking to protect themselves and their customers. With this new policy, Starbucks is hurting both individual workers (especially those at higher risk for serious illness and complications from COVID) and the community at large. I personally choose to wear a KN95 mask much of the time at work, and I believe others should be able to do the same.
